The Provost and Dean of the Faculty serves as Barnard’s chief academic officer. She supports Barnard’s President in the development and implementation of the College’s strategic academic priorities and acts as the academic liaison to Columbia University. In collaboration with a team of Vice Provosts and Deans, the Provost works to advance academic excellence, intellectual vitality, and a commitment to the open and rigorous pursuit of knowledge across the arts, humanities, and social, behavioral, and natural sciences.  

The Provost oversees Barnard’s academic departments, programs, and policies; its academic centers; its library and archives; and signature initiatives such as the Harlem Semester, the Summer Research Institute, Faculty-Led Travel Programs, 4+1 Pathways to B.A./M.A. degrees, the Roy and Diana Vagelos Science Center, a growing menu of new interdisciplinary minors and concentrations, and the ongoing development of AI literacy education. Supporting Barnard’s superb faculty of scholars, teachers, writers, artists, and practitioners, the Provost is responsible for oversight of faculty appointments, promotions, and the tenure-review process; academic integrity; faculty recruitment and retention; curriculum and co-curricular programs; international programs; faculty development across instructional ranks and career stages; post-award support for major grants; and efforts to enhance inclusion and equity across all academic units.
 
The Office of the Provost seeks to identify and grow Barnard’s unique contributions to teaching, research, and public impact by seeding new opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration, supporting the development and expansion of creative, high-impact courses, and fostering a spirit of intellectual curiosity, experimentation, bravery, and innovation.
